Minutes: The minutes from August were read and accepted – with one change: where the minutes read "13 new priests will be coming to Aust in 2012" it should read , " there will be 13 new priests altogether in 2012, including overseas priests, after ordinations" ?

Business arising :

Both Gympie and Hervey Bay have recently had retreats – very successful (Gympie had Sr Diana, and Hervey Bay had Sr Mary Franzmann) Gayndah also had time recently with Fr John Reilly who stayed in the parish for a few days, travelling to different churches and giving the homily. He charged very little and was very good.

Deanery retreat - was very meaningful, a beautiful setting at Ormiston. Maybe next year, we could have another deanery retreat – perhaps within our own region ( Bunya?); not a silent retreat next time

Correspondence: James Curtain emailed to inform us that the Archdiocesan pastoral Council has been disbanded, and its future will depend on the next Archbishop. Thank you to James for being our deanery rep on the council over the last couple of years.

Financial Statements:

All members were given a copy of expenditure by deanery and by individual parishes. By looking at other parish expenditure, we can perhaps get ideas for our own parish projects.

Left Over money: For those parishes who have already spent all their allocated funds, our dean has invited us to apply for any extra projects we may have before the end of the year – as there will be possibly $9 000 still available. This money does not carry over to next year. Please contact Fr Pat directly , at Gympie parish if you wish to obtain some of these funds.

Fr Paul and the Maryborough parish had prepared a list of projects , and wish to use some of the extra funds for these. These ideas were read out to the meeting.

Kim suggested that his parish might use some of the funds for Christmas Cultural activities for Youth in Gayndah.

Anne suggested one idea might be to bring in guest speakers from the Jesuit Refugee Society to our parish.

Dean's Comments:

The Dean showed us the 3 different sized new Missals which have recently arrived in parishes.

The Dean spoke about next year – The Year of Grace – the focus will be more on a deanery and parish level, rather than archdiocesan. Material will come through late January/February, in readiness for Pentecost when the Year of Grace begins.

There has been no word about the replacement for Archbishop Bathersby.

Fr Pat spoke about the recent meeting of the Australian Bishops with the Pope. They wish to find a role for retired Bishop Bill Morris, in the life of the Church in Australia.

Fr Pat said next year, all of us in the deanery would do well to take the opportunity to SLOW down! And make the most of the Year of Grace.

2011 Social Justice Statement (from the ACBC)

presented by Peter Arndt (From Catholic Justice and Peace Commission)

Peter led us through the document, concerning the Australian prison system and the pastoral needs of prisoners . Anne Young, previously a Prison Chaplain for 6 years, and Vince Dollison, currently a prison chaplain at Maryborough prison, share stories about the prisoners to whom they had ministered.

Peter, Anne and Vince are all happy to come and speak to parishioners, to help raise awareness of issues of prisoners and the special needs of prisoners on their release into the community.

Everyone introduced themselves and described their involvement in their respective parishes.

Minutes: Read and accepted

Business arising from Minutes:

1. Family Conference follow up - Jack spoke about the Men's group "Men Alive" Gympie will start this next June. Jack will have more to report at the next meeting. It is still in the planning stages.

2. Deanery Retreat – on 16/17 September. There are presently 24 participants, with a few places still spare. Participants will receive confirmation of details in early September.

3. Parish Retreats - Sr Mary Franzmann will be doing a retreat in H Bay on 30/31 October; Gympie will have a retreat day with Sr Dianna Law on 16^th October.

4. Deanery Youth Day – 60 people attended, with youth from Gympie, Gin Gin, Noosa, and Hervey Bay. This was held at Xavier College, Hervey Bay, and led by members of the Emmanuel Youth Outreach team. Gin Gin has a keen group of youth , and Nanango has a group with mainly primary aged children. Gympie is tying to get Year 7 involved before moving up to high school. The Gympie youth are involved in the cuppa after mass. Two ladies – Joanne Rogers and Sordelisa Claudio – are very involved and doing great work. Next year, perhaps Kingaroy might host the DYD? Julie said there is a new Youth coordinator in Kingaroy parish; otherwise Gympie will do it.

5. New Missal Workshops – there has been much positive feedback on the workshops with Elizabeth Harrington in our deanery.

Other Business:

Fr Joseph reported from the Deanery priests meeting - there will be 13 new priests coming to Australia in February 2012 (from Nigeria, India, and PNG)

The appointment of a new Archbishop may take a while as it is a long process.

In 2013, the new deanery fund will be much less – maybe $17 000 ? The Deanery Pastoral Council will need to review our Funding allocation . Our parishes have been fortunate to have funding over recent years for our own projects and this will not be the case in the future.

Expenditure Statements:

Each parish received a statement of their spending of funds (prepared by deanery finance person, Mary Kirkpatrick) PLEASE SPEND YOUR FUNDS BEFORE DECEMBER.

The money allocated to Beginning Theology courses may need to be reviewed, as very few groups have formed in recent years. It may need some good advertising again?

Social Justice Statement. Next Meeting (5^th November at Gympie) – Peter Arndt has offered to come to our deanery once again to speak on Prisons and the Justice System (latest Social Justice Statement to be released in September). Meeting agreed it may be worth bringing him to our next meeting; we would need to advertise it to our communities in case others (such as prison chaplains) may wish to attend also. Julie to check with Fr Pat Cassidy first.

Fr Michael Carroll gave a very interesting talk and insights on the history of Cherbourg . He recommends the book " A Dumping Ground , A history of Cherbourg Settlement 1900- 1940" - would be very good for parish libraries.

Fr Michael suggested the DPC may like to go to the Rations Shed at Cherbourg, when we meet in Murgon again, next year, for some education about the history of the aboriginals in the area.

Fr Michael also shared about his study of icons at the Catholic University in Belgium last year during his sabbatical. He has done some 'writing of icons'

Gympie, October 30^th 2010

Expenditure: Statements were given out, showing individual parish expenditure of deanery funds, and also deanery level expenditure. Three parishes have yet to spend their $4 500. Wayne said that Kingaroy will be sending invoices very soon, for their projects.

Cecilia Anning commented that the North Country was doing very well - we are spending our funds in the intended way. She congratulated us.

Wayne asked if it was possible to earmark funds for early next year. Fr Pat said yes, but only if the project had begun this year, with invoices coming in next year.

Budget: The following suggested budget for 2011 was discussed.

The $10 000 allocated to Special Projects, was discussed (previously this has been used for WYD, Pray 2010, and other major events) Some suggestions for this:

Ecumenical Gatherings are being organized throughout the Archdiocese in 2011, the closes being at Sippy Downs. Fr Pat suggested we use funds for buses to attend this.
A Deanery retreat – maybe at Ormiston? – was suggested, for Deanery Pastoral Council members , and an invitation to all (costing to be done by February meeting)
Sponsoring youth to the WYD in Spain

The Parish level funds – all agreed to continue as we did last year – with individual parishes applying for funds for projects which implement Synod priorities (the stated purpose of our deanery funding) The application forms to go out soon, to all DPC members. These to be completed and returned by February meeting.

Pastoral Plan Review. Our deanery needs to send in statistics to the Archdiocese, and name any changes to our 2005-2011 Pastoral Plan. The plan as is, may be used to 2013; priests meeting will further discuss this, as well as the deanery exec. At our February meeting, comments/review on the existing plan will be given to the DPC members to discuss.

One thing mentioned, was the need for each parish to have a Local Plan, in cases of emergency (i.e. when the priest is suddenly ill/unavailable). Priests will discuss this at their next priests meeting.

Parish Profiles template (number of baptisms, funerals, etc) was given out again to all DPC members. All statistics to be sent to Julie Lynch( Fax 41243983) by the end of 2010 if possible.

General Business:

Fr John Hong commented that Peter Warner in his parish, had been training to be deacon, but at present his training was not proceeding. Fr John is disappointed, and feels that there is a big need for a permanent deacon in the Kingaroy /Nanango parishes.

It was suggested that we put on our agenda for February – the need for diaconate and/or lay ministries in our deanery. How to ensure an increase in such ministers.

Sr. Cecilia Anning distributed a sheet which explains the Role of the Secretariat for pastoral Councils. She introduced our new deanery members on the secretariat – Elaine Madill for the west o f our deanery, and Helen Bonanno, for the East side. She thanked Pat Deeley for her years of great work, reporting to the secretariat on behalf of the East side., and presented her with a lovely framed thank you certificate.

WORKSHOP

Peter Arndt broke open the Social Justice Statement 2010 (Violence in Australia), with small group discussions. Peter offered his services to any parish, who might like to explore social justice issues, or find more resources. set up social justice groups .....

Business arising :

*Julie to email youth contacts, and organize a meeting to start preparing for the Deanery Youth Day (August)

* Fr Bill O'Shea's presentation in Gympie (Movement for a Better World) was to be in May, but has been postponed. Jack Crough, PPC chair in Gympie, will let us know the dates, so any other deanery members can attend, if they are interested. The presentation is an all day event, and Gympie parish plans to implement the follow up program .

Correspondence: A letter sent to our dean by Bishop Brian was read out – it was the approval for the $34 000 deanery level funds (this includes administration, wages for coordinator, $16 000 for all parishes to send people to Pray 2010, etc. See budget)

Deanery funding to parishes:

FOR PAYMENT OF INVOICES, OR REIMBURSEMENTS FROM DEANERY FUNDS: All invoices to be sent to: Mary Kirkpatrick, St Mary's Catholic Parish, 269 Adelaide St, Maryborough 4650 . If this is money to be reimbursed, please include the name of the reimbursee, and their address, so a cheque can be sent.

Fr John Hong asked about the money which is not spent in any one year. He suggests that this money be used for the future. This has been discussed with the Archdiocese in previous years – if any project is ongoing i.e it begins in one year and continues in the following year, or invoices are to be paid in the following year, that is OK. However, keeping money for future years, with no definite project already started , is not allowed. Looking on the positive side, this does ensure that each parish does some planning, in order to access the funds in the immediate future.

Julie was asked to send out the parish expenditure statement for this year so far, with these minutes (though not much has been spent as yet, due to parishes finalizing and sending in their plans)

Julie is still waiting on 3 parishes to send in their plan/application. Kay asked if spending could begin now – and the answer is yes. There is money in the account, (from the approved deanery level funding) SO (we are assuming our parish level funding will get approval!) parishes may begin spending.

IT was suggested that the synod priorities and examples of ways to implement, be sent to all parishes (Julie to find some which the archdiocese sent to all parishes a couple of years ago……….)

It was suggested that budget updates be always sent to PPC chairs. (all but two of the chairs are actually members of the DPC, but Julie will send a separate mail out to PPC chairs) Please note: all DPC reps need to be updating their PPC's on deanery activities, funding, etc.

Kay asked whether planning by PPC's could be ongoing i.e. each year plan for the year ahead with deanery funding. (We have been told that the current level of funding will continue for three years, including this year, so PPC's could well be planning a little ahead; the deanery pastoral council will review the budget each November.

Pray 2010. Buses have been booked for a day trip to Friday 9 July sessions. – one for the east of deanery (Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Gympie, and Childers?), with 44 bookings so far. Murgon, Kingaroy and Nanango have one small bus going, with 10 bookings so far. Gayndah will be taking car loads of people. The $2000 funds per parish, may be distributed by each parish, as fairly as possible, to support people going to Pray 2010 (i.e. for registration, fuel/transport, and accommodation perhaps)

Future Meetings and workshops

JULY 24 Meeting (Gympie) : Elizabeth Harrington was booked for this meeting. She has concerns about the amount of time, so the following is proposed:

Brief meeting begins at 9.30am; 10am cuppa; 10.30 – 12.30 workshop; 12.30 LUNCH

Julie to contact Elizabeth about this. Proposed topic for the liturgy workshop: Lay lead liturgies. (perhaps also ministry of communion to the sick). General guidelines regarding Lay Liturgies, and discussion of some of the issues surrounding this .

OCTOBER 30 (Maryborough) – Peter Arndt has been booked to come and "break open" the Social Justice statement which will be released in September (this year it is about anger and violence)

Meeting finished at 12 noon, followed by LUNCH

RETREAT: Many members went to the home of Fran and Neil Hutton, of Wondai, for an afternoon retreat. , with afternoon tea and bbq tea. Thank you so much to Fran for leading us through a lovely time of reflection and to Elaine Madill, Murgon DPC rep, for organizing this.

PRAY 2010 There was discussion on our participation in Pray 2010 (July , in Mt Gravatt). Parishes have been sent detailed programs and registration details. Some Early Bird discounts still apply for those registering by 31^st March. Hervey Bay parish said they were considering hiring a bus , to take parishioners down for one day……this would enable more to attend, and save on accommodation costs. It was suggested that a good use of deanery funds might be to hire a bus (perhaps one for Childers, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Gympie and one for Murgon, Gayndah, Nanango and Kingaroy) . West and East of deanery to organize this for themselves, if they get good response…. Elizabeth told us about the call for volunteers for Pray 2010, if anyone is interested.

The proposed budget as outlined above , was accepted by those present. It was pointed out, the Archdiocese has stipulated the use of deanery funds for MAJOR projects at deanery level. We all agreed that our deanery was unique , with its large area, and far flung parishes, and that some of our funding should continue to be used at parish level, while using half our funds for deanery level projects. IT is important that our focus be on the Synod priorities, as listed in the Budget document. This will be proposed to Bishop Brian Finnigan.

All parish priests and pastoral councils will be sent the application forms for parish projects , to be returned to Julie , by early March. These will then be submitted to Bishop Brian for approval of our funding.

Please Note: The dean asks that each parish keeps the number of projects to just 2 or 3 major ones.

This might be helpful to parishes, in formulating their own applications. This to be sent to all Parishes.

Pray 2010: as in our budget, $2 000 has been allocated for each parish to send people to Pray 2010. Once parishes know how much they will need to help send people to Brisbane (including cost of transport, accommodation and registration), please let Deanery know, by the end of March. Any excess funds can then be redistributed, to those parishes with larger contingents.

The retreat after the April meeting, will be at Fran's house, with an afternoon tea. Those who need to go, may then leave, then the others remain for a bb q. Anyone needing to be billeted for the night……Elaine will organize this, with Mass in the morning. Julie and Elaine will remind everyone in March, and find out who can stay . It is unfortunate that most priests will need to go back to their parishes for Mass on Saturday night; it is hoped they will have time to stay for the first part of the retreat.

It was suggested that we invite all parishioners to attend this, if they wish, along with the DPC members.

The workshop with Elizabeth Harrington in July – this to be confirmed with Elizabeth. , and once again, all parishioners to be advised that this will occur.

Fr Bill O'Shea and Mary Fama – Movement for a Better World – will be presenting a session in Gympie after Easter. Fr Pat will advise of the date.

For October meeting, it is suggested that we invite Peter Arndt (Social Justice Commission), as he offered last year, to come up to us.

Youth

Youth reps from parishes have been contacted, and some initial conversation has begun on the Deanery Youth Day this year. It is proposed that August 1^st be the date for this, and it will be hosted by Maryborough parish. Julie to liaise with the youth reps, and organize a meeting in April.

Outgoing Members

Pat Deeley and David Hogan, from Hervey Bay , will no longer be attending DPC meetings. IT was suggested that they be sent a Thank You for their contribution. Julie to bring a list of members to next meeting, to confirm membership from each parish.

It was also suggested that a note be sent to each PPC, explaining the role of the DPC, and naming the reps. (as was done last year)

Minutes should be sent to PPC chairs after every meeting – a good idea, in case the DPC member is not a regular attender at PPC meetings.

The meeting finished at 11.15am.

Other parishioners then joined us, in the Church, for the Lenten seminar, presented by Fr Anthony Mellor, Tricia Stapleton, and Rob Cosgrove., finishing with a shared lunch.

Regarding the Pray 2010 mentioned by Fr Pat last meeting, posters have been sent to all parishes: There will be a progam on 7-10 July in Brisbbane…..will guests such as Fr Stan Fortuna, Fr Frank Brennan. (More info at www.pray2010.org.au)
Use of Youth funds. Helen said that at Childers, they were planning to have occasional masses for families, bringing another priest to do this, so that Fr Emmanuel was free for his other Sunday Mass commitments. Funds would be used for the supply priest, and also for the bbq/lunch provided afterwards

Correspondence:*Peter Arndt has emailed , offering to come up to parishes and deaneries, to meet briefly about the Social Justice Statement. Peter has done this for us before, and this was good. It was decided that (due to large distances to travel), we will not organize this for this year, but ask Peter maybe in 2010 to come up to see us, at one of our scheduled DPC meetings. IT does not matter if it is not around the time of release of the Social Justice Statement.

*BUILDING FAMILIES SEMINARS - The Archdiocesan Centre for Family and Life, have been presenting these seminars around the archdiocese, and one will be coming to Hervey Bay on Saturday 10^th October . Topics include family relationships, praying as a family, and the Children's Ministry team will offer creative and fun activities for children of all ages. All are invited – and especially those parishes near to Hervey Bay might like to take this opportunity. God coin donation and BYO lunch. Posters have been sent to Parishes. Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (James Curtain, our deanery APC rep spoke with us via phone)

So far, the APC has met four times this year. They are still in formation. At each meeting, there has been a presentation by one of the vicariates eg Faith & Life, Archdiocesan Services, etc. The council has s arted looking at key pastoral issues. This was initially by brainstorming, then Archbishop Bathersby chose some issues. At each meeting, a paper has been sent out beforehand, then there is discussion and feedback to the Archbishop at the meeting.

Some issues have been : evangelization (650 000 Catholics, and less than 10 % connected) ; faith formation of youth, ecumenism, sacraments, social justice, global issues, parish leadership.

Some questions were addressed to James from our group- regarding youth, music (connecting with youth) , reconnecting with those who come occasionally to Mass, keeping connected to those in nursing homes. James will take some of our comments back to the A PC. James asked any member of the DPC to contact him at anytime if they wish to pass on ideas/comments for the APC. His number is 0409598179

It was agreed that speaking to James by phone worked very well. Sufficient time for APC report/discussion will be factored in, for future meetings. (whether by phone, or with James present)

YOUTH DAY in Gympie

This was a real success, with approx 60 attending, from teenagers to young adults. People came from Nanango, Maryborough, Murgon and Hervey Bay and Gympie. A great photo was in the catholic Leader. Many thanks to Joanne Rogers and Sordelisa Claudio in Gympie and the rest of the deanery team for their hard work organizing this day.

At the Youth day, it was suggested that another day be held, and Nanango said they wou ld like to host this. Moira suggested, after the day, that this might be before the end of 2009, (as two of their youth would leave after this) The meeting suggested that only one Deanery level youth day be organized each year, and maybe the one in Nanango/Bunya Mts, could be organized early in 2010??? (However does not suit youth in Nanango – Julie to see Moira) Other option is, parishes can organize events and invite others… but will not be promoted as a deanery event, as such………

There were some young adults, and older adults who come to these gatherings and chat with each on the "sidelines"". Moira Thompson, from Nanango, sent an email suggesting that some sort of family support network be set up from amongst these people who meet, and who are enthusiastic about their faith. She suggested communication on line and the possibility of prayer days or a retreat day with Fr pat Cassidy. Moira is happy to coordinate this. The meeting discussed this, suggesting that at future Youth Day, the parents have a session at the same time, and a network might spring from this. This is to be kept in mind for planning for 2010. Julie to see Moira.

Moira has set up a Business called Experience Altitude, and offers bushwalking adventures and retreat experiences…. With reasonable rates. The meeting thought this sounded wonderful, and maybe this could be our next combined (adult/youth ) event for 2010…in the Bunyas.

Funding

Fr Paul suggested that if people have a project in mind, this could be written down, and the deanery funds set aside for the future. (Please do this as soon as possible, if you wish to "hang on" to funds!)

Fr pat Cassidy commented on the future of deanery funding. A review has been conducted, and the report should be out soon. The funding might be given over 3 years rather than 1 year…..

Retreat Day: Following on from our discussion in May about a retreat day, Elaine suggested a retreat in Murgon in April 2010 (NOT Mother's Day and NOT show hol) at Fran Hutton's place at Wondai; perhaps we could have our meeting, then go to Frans in the afternoon, with a BBQ for the evening meal. People could stay with host families or motels, or if we finish at a reasonable time, some peop le might choose to travel home that evening. Elaine will talk to Fran – suggesting April 17^th, 2010

Three people had been asked to share about their ministry in parish and in life ( a suggestion from our last meeting) Tom Bushell, Kim Koster, and Pat Deeley generously shared from their heart, and this was appreciated by us all.

Business arising: A deanery retreat was suggested at the last meeting – this will be discussed in a later agenda item……

Youth update: Julie updated everyone on the Deanery Youth Day planning – two meetings have been held, and minutes and a flyer sent to all DPC reps and Parish Priests a month ago. There will be a brochure, posters, and a letter sent to all Catholic High Schools and parishes in the deanery in June. Fr John Hong said he would be away at that time, so any correspondence concerning this is to be sent to the Kingaroy parish office.

A few of these rarely respond to emails about Deanery Youth, and Julie acknowledged that those in schools receive hundreds of emails and this made email contact not always very effective.

Neil Hutton , while Campus Minister at Kingaroy , is actually a member of Murgon parish; IT was suggested that Julie get Neil's home email/ address, and liaise with him that way. Gillian and Chris Voigt are at present the only youth contacts in Murgon parish, although they are presently very busy with a new baby. Julie to check with Jim Cross, the PPC chair at Kingaroy about possible youth contacts for Kingaroy parish

Formation topics – for the last few DPC meetings, we have spent one hour on the meeting, and the second hour with an invited guest speaker………(such as Gwen from Family and Life, Peter Arndt from Social Justice, Fr Pat on Ignatian Spirituality). Members were invited to offer suggestions for future meetings.
*Moira said she has done a hospital chaplaincy course, in Toowoomba, and would be happy to give input on this ministry; or on the Hill Song conference she attended recently

*Fran Hutton could be invited to come along and talk, especially when the meeting is next in Murgon – on her Santiago De Çompostela walk

*State School RE – Brisbane Youth and Children's ministry has resource people; David has much experience….

*SVDP (David could talk on this; he is currently president in Hervey Bay, and has been involved for many years, here and in Sydney..)

*Centacare and Social issues………… Could invite someone from Centacare (Kingaroy and/or Hervey Bay)

*It was suggested that whoever hosts the DPC meeting, could organize the formation session, and there are many local people (including those already mentioned) who could contribute. Those parishes who do not host DPC, of course, can contribute as well

*IT could be a few different speakers, with 15./20 minutes each .

Tom suggested that we put into the agenda, a chance for members to share about their own involvement in their communities. HE offered to do this himself next time.

Expenditure statements

Each parish was given its own expenditure statement ,prepared by Mary Kirkpatrick . The deanery level spending was also looked at.

Murgon reminded us that they had decided not to use their whole $4 000 for Youth projects. Julie to make sure Mary is aware of this..

Fr John Hong asked if there was flexibility between Kingaroy and Nanango budgets i.e. if one goes over the amount, can be balanced by one spending less…..It was felt that it was reasonable to have a certain amount of flexibility.

Workshops at Deanery Level

As discussed at last meeting, the deanery level budget allocates $940 for deanery workshops. We talked about what was most needed/desired …….

Suggestions:
*Pat Deeley spoke about the Hervey Bay's scripture group was thinking of bringing someone up to talk about Acts…..A priest at Caboolture was suggested to Pat; this is to be followed up. This could perhaps be offered to whole deanery.

*Elizabeth Harrington could be asked up once again – for something liturgical

*Most discussion was around the idea of a Prayerful Day……maybe a taste of different spiritualities (Including Fr Pat Cassidy on Ignatian spirituality, as suggested in previous minutes.) Elaine said that Fran Hutton home property was ideal for a prayerful retreat, with Fran leading meditation. WE could plan for a Deanery Retreat – a full day, rather than a weekend. (Next year, we could plan ahead for a Monday of a long weekend – would be better for the priests) It would be good to share the time together, with a meal, etc.. The funding could go towards motel, as well as fuel costs, for the travelers….

*Fr John Hong suggested workshops on the new missal in late 2010

Our Deanery Pastoral Council Guidelines. (Review)

We read through the DPC guidelines, with some small changes being made.

Membership was discussed and it was pointed out that a couple of people were there, not to represent a parish –Pat Deeley is the member of the Secretariat for Pastoral Councils for the East of our deanery, as is Margaret Shepherdson for the West. James Curtain is on DPC as member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (Previously this was Tom Bushell , and prior to that, it was Julie Lynch)

Term of office was discussed. IT is important that others be given the chance to take on the role (appointed by the Parish Pastoral Council ), after the first 3 year term………though it was acknowledged that not many were prepared , or able to give up this amount of time on a Saturday. The sentence in the TERM of OFFICE section will now have the last few words deleted ("for one more term", allowing the same person to stay in the role for as many terms as necessary – as long someone else is given the chance at end of each term, to take on the role.

The DPC now meets 4 times each year .

The sentence "in between meetings, the eastern and western sides of the deanery are encouraged to meet" was deleted. The priests gather once every two months…..

The date for next review to be added to the bottom .

There was discussion on the day for meeting, and it was felt that Saturday mornings, though inconvenient for some of the priests, and others, was really the only time for working people.

Julie to make these changes and send the guidelines out with the minutes.

A list of all Deanery Pastoral Councillors was distributed …., and a few changes made. WE need to check with Maryborough, Childers and Gayndah, to confirm their current DPC rep's name. IT was suggested that a list be distributed , with the parish or organization being represented, being stated next to each name. Julie to do this.

AS it is a few years since Pastoral Councils have been informed of the DPC role, Julie will send this information (The guidelines and the list of reps) to all PPC chairs. Julie said she does communicate with PPC chairs from time to time, in particular about use of the funds. She is able to get a list of PPC chairs from Cecilia Anning..

Julie should do the minutes fairly promptly, so members can then use them to report to their respective parish/committees.

Dean's Comments

*Fr Pat shared Sr Rose's Thank You card with the group. Rose thanked the deanery for their gift (a $100 book voucher) and expressed how much she had enjoyed being part of our deanery for many years.

*Fr Pat talked about the "Pray 2010"which was being launched in the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese wants us to explore areas of spirituality over the next year. This is the Arch's area of giftedness/expertise.

The meeting closed at 12.10pm, and we shared a delicious lunch of chicken and chips , kindly organized by Fr Dan.

Meeting regarding Youth, held in Gympie

15^th March 2009

DEANERY EVENT. ($4 000 of our $40 000 has been set aside to assist with costs for deanery level event)

ALL agreed that it would be very worthwhile to gather the youth of our deanery once more (there was a camp two years ago, held in Margate – mainly Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Gympie participants; also a Deanery Youth Day held in Hervey Bay, three years ago…..) This could become a yearly event.

Sordelisa said that Gympie would like to invite people to come to Gympie, so it was agreed that this be the venue for our deanery event. There was discussion about overnight camp, or one day event………eventually, it was decided that it be our

Deanery Youth Day be held in Gympie…………On Sunday, 2^nd August, from approx 10am to 4pm. We will have activities, bbq lunch and finish with Mass…

Sordelisa will : 1. Check the venue (St Patrick's Primary Hall) (Has since been confirmed – thanks Sordelisa….)

2. Check with Emmanuel – to see if they can come up on that date , and help with activities. (?

3. Design a flyer to be sent out to all parishes. (Julie will inform all parishes of the date, and the flyer to go out a bit closer to the time?) ((Sordelisa has done this since the meeting……..coming soon!)

The Organizing committee for the Deanery Day, will be: Sordelisa Claudio (Gympie), Gay Gordon (Gayndah), Elizabeth Arthy (Nanango) and Carmel Donnelly (Hervey Bay)…….. Julie to send each of their email addresses to these four.

NEXT PLANNING MEETING: A date was set for this group, plus other parish reps , to plan the event: Saturday 9^th May, at 10 am in Gympie.

( All parishes - please consult your youth group/key youth, and send in any ideas for the Deanery Youth Day by this date. )

Other suggestions for deanery youth:

1. A few parishes could share buses , when youth are travelling to an event (Diocesan or deanery ) – a good way for them to network, get to know each other, and fun as well!

2. Fr Paul suggested using Facebook as a way of connecting our deanery youth. Fr Paul to explore this further.

PARISH LEVEL: Intended Use of Funding: All parishes have sent in a rough outline of how they will spend the allocated $4500 per parish for youth evangelization purposes. These are as follows:

MURGON

At the last Pastoral Council, the Youth funding was discussed. There are only two youth in our parish who would make use of this fund – a young couple in their 20's, who would like to attend Youth happenings in other parishes in the deanery , or in Brisbane, to nurture their faith. It was decided that $1500 would be used to reimburse them for fuel and motel costs for these events throughout the year. The rest of the funds offered, will be given back to the deanery to re –distribute, or use for the deanery youth event.

It was decided at the meeting, that while Murgon is at present planning to use only $1500, for Youth purposes, the remaining $3 000 remain available to them, if something eventuates during the year. Any moneys left, later in the year, could perhaps be used for deanery level events….,

Kingaroy:

Plans to utilize the youth funds to assist young people in their needs of faith and spiritual journey such as retreats, camps, reflections, and other opportunities being offered in the Archdiocese, and so on... Plan to purchase some music, and, if possible, other materials which can help for the liturgy and mass in the parish not only for the youth but also for children and adults. We hope to form a group to help envisage the youth ministry in the parish on a practical level.

Nanango

:We are a small (3 youth and 3 adults) group at present formed out of our World Youth Day experience. We meet together regularly for social and spiritual support. We want to continue to gather together and would like from time to time to gather with other deanery youth groups. We hope to attract other youths to share the journey of faith with us through dialogue and invitation to our planned events.

In the coming year we envisage joining with other youth groups in the deanery from time to time, a trip to the Bunyas for prayer, hiking and reflection, a trip to the seaside incorporating prayer and fishing, we would like to offer a reflection or retreat day for the young and not so young of the parish. We hope to continue to connect with the Archdiocesan events whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Since WYD08 we have initiated holy hour in our parish and we have created interest in the prayer of the church (Morning and Evening Prayer of the Church) and hope this will develop further in time.

Funding would assist us especially with travel costs and will enable us to do the things we are planning. We would also like to be able to purchase resources (music tapes, programmes, prayer books etc.)

Elizabeth commented that Nanango's focus is on the youth, AND their families.

CHILDERS:

We are looking at hosting our first 'Youth Mass' program starting on the 21^st March 2009. This Mass will be the first, 'invite your friend' Mass and the entire Mass organization, the music, Ministers of Eucharist, reader's will all be from the youth of our community. We are going to use this as the start of our bi-monthly 'youth Mass' program.

Our first Mass will also include a BBQ afterwards with funds going towards this, and then will also be used to establish some programs in the Parish community. We are hoping to use some of this money to hire some musicians for the Masses to assist with live music, as well as use some of the money towards the installation of a data projector to project words and images through out the Mass, to bring the rites to a level that is easier to understand for youth.

We are envisaging that from the success of these Masses, that we are able to start a youth group that will want to be a part of organizing these Masses as well as coming together for other occasions such as Lenten programs, social occasions and the like. We feel though we need to encourage the youth to come back to the Parish first before we start our youth programs formally

Hervey Bay

We have an active and growing Youth Ministry Team and we would like to continue to nurture them and others.

We plan to utilize the funds to continue to assist our young people to access opportunities that are being offered in the Archdiocese. Since distance is one of the major obstacles our parish faces the funds are welcoming for our group in paying for transport and assisting them to attending the larger camps, conferences and training opportunities that attract high quality speakers and give such a memorable experience to continue to nurture their passion and drive for ministry and engagement in the Catholic Church. Eg. Zero Gravity camp held in Yandina January 09, Ignite Conference in Brisbane, September 09, Youth and Children's Ministry Training Day Feb 09

· We also plan to continue to provide support to our group when organizing and planning workshops for the younger members of the parish. These workshops require resources, such as art/craft supplies as well as the opportunity for hospitality such as finishing the morning with light refreshments which cost.· The team is always engaging in community events and projects throughout the city and these funds will assist them by providing funds that they would normally take out of their own pockets. The team engages in youth ministered masses and at times we need to purchase music or run ideas that require displays etc throughout the church. Once again materials are needed to be purchased.Thank you for your ongoing financial commitment to the young people in our midst as well as the opportunity for relationships to foster with all members of God's family.

Maryborough

Plans to utilize its youth money by the core project of gathering young people into a reflection group that can share ideas about worthwhile projects (mission projects, community support projects). The young peoples groups then decide on activities and funding percentages for these projects. We envisage having around three group gatherings with catering provided and activities, so that people can gather, and then re-gather again to prioritise, reflect, listen and then act. We have in mind a combination between a youth social group, a mini-vinnies and a social justice and prayer group all rolled into one. It will be young people gathered for purposeful projects making a difference.

Gympie

Keeping in mind our goal of "Nurturing Catholic Christian Spirituality in Young Yeople after Sacramental Initiation into Adulthood", we intend to use the Four thousand five hundred dollars ($4,500.00) Youth fund as follows:

2,500.00 – Training courses and Camps

$2,000.00 – Resources, T-shirts, stationary and refreshments

Gayndah

The focus in Gayndah is mainly on primary aged children, with a few in secondary. Those in secondary are acting in leadership roles in parish youth. Many of the 18-25 yrs age group go to Brisbane to study/work.

The meeting agreed that this was a fairly common issue in country parishes; it is up to each parish, which age group they need to target………. Fr Paul commented that our young people who are in Brisbane to study, are still "ours" and so it is good to keep in mind, that we might fund them to attend events, etc. while they are there……

It was suggested that forming links with groups/organizations in Brisbane is very worthwhile; Miriam, in Yr 12 in Nanango, has formed some links with Emmanuel, and this is supportive for her in her faith …..

Meeting 14^th February, 2009

Welcome: David H ogan chaired the meeting, as Tom was away. David welcomed James Curtain, new to the D PC, and our newly appointed representative on the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. James explained that no meetings had been held as yet, and there was to be a Formation day soon for the re-formed council. HE said it was important to understand that the members were not in a "representative " role as such; Elaine (who had been at the nominees discernment day) said that the choice of nominees was based on a good cross-section of the archdiocese, and care was taken to ensure a cross of male/female; young/old, etc.

*THE deanery gathering in Maryborough on 8^th December. Several people commented that this gathering was worthwhile – in particular, to meet and get to know parish workers from other parishes in our deanery.

*Imprimatur on retreat givers . Fr Paul said that he had written about this to the Archdiocese, and Bishop Brian had responded at the last Deanery Priests meeting – it is really up to each parish to decide on who they invite to give retreats, run programs; the diocese can only say if there are no Major concerns.

(Fr Joseph made the comment that the legal requirement for parent permission for baptism, was still a concern. The Priest's council was saying that there is not really a need to do this??)

1. Deanery gathering on 18^th Upcoming Events:

Feb in Gympie – the deanery will fund buses, fuel costs for this.

2. Youth training day on 21^st February in Brisbane. Parishes were encouraged to use funding to send Youth to such days … Nanango, Hervey Bay and Maryborough said that people were attending.

3. Mass with Blessing of the Oils – Sunday 29^th March, 2.30pm Gympie

Allocation of Funds for 2009

It was suggested that the amounts allocated in Deanery level – for Adult Faith Education, be restructured – perhaps less on the Beg Theol courses, and funding for buses/transport for things such as Deanery Gathering in Feb , be named in this section. (Julie to do this )

Next meeting, we can decide what parishes are wanting in terms of deanery level (or east deanery/west deanery - workshops ($950 has been allocated for this purpose)

Youth funding – a meeting will be held regarding Youth , in Gympie on 14^th March. The deanery level youth event/s to be discussed then.

FORMATION SESSION. (Some of the Gympie parishioners joined us for this session)

Ignatian Spirituality – Fr Pat Cassidy

Fr Pat spoke about his passion for this type of spirituality, and his experiences doing the Ignatian retreat, and being trained as a Spiritual Director. Fr Pat has lead priests, and also parishioners, through the Exercises for Daily Life. Two of those present (Sordelisa and Jack) spoke of the benefits they had received from doing this.

Some excellent books recommended by Fr Pat: "Return of the Prodigal Son" (Henri Nouwen), "Sadhana" (Anthony de Mello), "Bread that is Broken" (Breemen), " The Saints Guide to Happiness (Robert Ellsberg) – about everyday 'saints'.

Fr Pat offers a 9 week program of "Ignatian exercises for Daily Life"

It was suggested that we could have a deanery retreat , conducted by Fr Pat.

WYD Pilgrimage & Days in the Dioceses

Saturday 23rd February, 2008 Kilkivan

PURPOSE of meeting was explained: To plan for Days in the Diocese (DitD) – Thursday 10^th – Sunday 13^th July, in our deanery. This is the time when overseas visitors will be hosted by families in our local parishes. It is estimated that , if the Archdiocese hosts 6 500 pilgrims, 200 of these will be placed in the North Country Deanery. All parish priests have been sent letters, asking for an expression of interest in being a host parish. Another letter will soon be sent from the archbishop.

Our deanery has $40 000 from the Archdiocese to allocate to WYD activities. As decided at a Deanery Pastoral Council in late 2007, the money will be allocated in the following way:

* $180 will be granted to each pilgrim travelling from our deanery to Sydney. (Each parish to provide documentation and contact Mary Kirkpatrick in Maryborough for this funding)

*Extra money will be granted to any pilgrim in financial difficulty (application to go to deanery executive, or to Fr Pat Cassidy , the dean)

*The remaining money is to be spent on activities during Days in the Dioceses 10 – 13 July. At the deanery pastoral council November 2007, it was suggested that a deanery event be held on Saturday 12^th July at a central point in the deanery (Kilkivan was suggested). This was to be an alternative to the "Heart of the City" festival being held in Brisbane.

Discussion:

Fran suggested that it would be a good idea to have separate coordinators for the different aspects of WYD – one for the actual pilgrimage to Sydney, one to organize homestay for DitD, and one to organize the Community Service and other activities during the homestay. IT was pointed out, that this was difficult in very small parishes, where it often fell to the one person to organize everything!

Fran said that the minimum number of host families (each family hosts 2 people) in a parish would be about 5 , as all visiting groups would need to stay together in the same parish, and 10 was an approximate minimum number for travelling groups. With this in mind, Carla felt that Childers probably could not host any visitors, as only one or two families had expressed interest.

Regarding maximum number of visitors parishes were willing to host, the following estimates were suggested by the parish reps:

Hervey Bay 100 - 130, Maryborough 40 - 50, Gympie 10 – 20, Nanango 10. As no one was present from Kingaroy or Murgon, an estimate was not given. Gayndah has already indicated that they would not host visitors for DitD. Fran said that it was hoped all homestay visitors would be allocated by the end of March.

All parishes said they had just started advertising the homestay. Hosts could register online, though Hervey Bay said they were asking people to fill out and hand in, hard copies, and the coordinators would enter the details online, later. This is a way of knowing how many host families we have got.

Discussion on Event for Saturday 12^th July (alternative to Heart of the City)

It was decided not to consider offering a trip to Brisbane for the Heart of the City (even though our visitors might expect to be going, from the promotional material). It would be messy , for some of the group to travel to Bris, and others stay behind. This could be clarified when our homestay visitors are allocated to us (we will be given their contact details and can plan with them before they arrive)

Bradley had quotes for a day trip to Fraser Island on the Saturday; Hervey Bay had similar ideas; Liz suggested a trip to Mt Pomona/ Noosa for the Gympie visitors; Elizabeth said Nanango visitors could do a trip to the Bunyas. With these four parishes expressing different ideas for their visitors (Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Gympie, Nanango), it was decided that each of these centres could organize their own activity on the Saturday. Each parish could apply for funding to organize this activity. IF Kingaroy and Murgon do host minimum numbers, they could link in with the activities of another parish.

It was suggested that each parish could do its own local trip (maybe on the Friday ) , BUT also attend the Brisbane event on the Saturday. However, iT was felt that this was cramming too much in the few days. While there is a recommended program (including community service on the Friday, and a commissioning liturgy on the Sunday), Fran pointed out this was a guideline only.

Liz asked if there were resources for the daily liturgies( recommended in the DitD suggested program) and/or the Sunday liturgy. Fran said a manual is coming to us – will be given out at the training day on 8^th March in Brisbane. – this will have all info for homestay, including suggested prayer, social activities, etc.

The question was raised about insurance ( in the event of eg a car accident involving a visitor) . This should be covered by church insurance.

Fran asked all parishes to send her details of their own pilgrimage groups (how and when they will be travelling ), as this will be important in deciding the time frame for the visitors

Julie reminded those who travelled to the meeting, and those who will go to the training day in Brisbane, that funding for petrol could be obtained. Please email the km travelled , to Julie and you will be reimbursed 20cents/km.

MINUTES OF DEANERY PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING

Budget: Proposed budget for 2008 was given out. This had been discussed at the November 2007 meeting; all approved. All were reminded that funds are available for petrol reimbursement (20c per km) – for events such as DPC meetings, and other deanery events.

Deanery Workshops:It was suggested that we have a workshop at deanery level later this year. This is to be put on the agenda for next meeting. What sort of training/formation is needed? One suggestion was a follow up to the "Reconciliation" issues emphasized by the recent Government Apology to the indigenous people of Australia. We could contact the Murri Ministry. Perhaps this could be after our November DPC meeting, as we have done before.?

The Lenten workshop – this was held at Hervey Bay this year, with some people from Maryborough attending. It was suggested that Rob Cosgrove be contacted and encouraged (for 2009) to do the East and West of our Deanery (Two workshops) as has happened in the past.

WYD update:

Gympie – The previous organizer was no longer involved, and this is being passed over possibly to Liz Last, the Campus Minister.

Maryborough – Stuart said there were some difficulties with booking flights. If they had to go early, where could they stay? It was suggested that Stuart contact the WYD office in Sydney for this information.

Childers – asked how do we get the $180 per pilgrim from the deanery WYD funds. IT was explained that any sort of documentation showing the number of pilgrims would be sufficient for Mary Kirkpatrick to distribute these funds.

With regard to Dit D (Days in the Dioceses) – this has been advertised, and BriZstay registration forms available at Masses. There is concern with the costs associated with long drives to any deanery event in DitD; also, as Carla (along with another teacher) are going to Sydney prior to WYD, there will be noone to coordinate the DitD activities, in Childers.

Nanango: There are 4 people booked to go to WYD in Sydney, with 4 yet to do so. There are 3 families willing to host overseas pilgrims, so far.

Hervey Bay: There are 43 pilgrims going, including 5 adult supervisors. A committee was formed last year. One person is coordinating the pilgrimage to Sydney. Two people are organizing the Days in the Dioceses/Homestay and one person is in charge of fundraising.

Discussion: IT was suggested that funding could be given directly to host families to help with transport, etc. especially if there is an event in Kilkivan on the Saturday. If an event was held in Kilkivan, we could contact the Horse Ride Committee, for contacts and suggestions.

Archdiocesan Pastoral Council

Tom said that there was a major review last year, and as yet, he has not heard the result. Fr Pat said that at a Dean's meeting late last year, there still had been no decision about the future of the APC

Priest's meetings.

It was suggested that any issues from the Priests gatherings could be brought up at our DPC meetings - we could have a set "Report from Priests meeting" on our agenda.

Dean's Comments.

Fr Pat asked that we keep Fr Dan in our prayers , as he hadn't been well.

He suggested that the WYD could have a "review" later in the year – maybe in October..(a gathering of all those involved in our deanery?)

The Mass of the Oils will be in Gympie on 9^th March. Fr Pat encouraged all to come to this, as it is a deanery event. We can apply for funds to help with travel.

Around the Parishes.

Childers. The inside of the church has been painted and cement paths laid around; a covered area has been constructed between the Church and the school

Hervey Bay. The gambling fund has helped with the refurbishing of our hall.

Centacare has begun building a new childcare centre. The "turning of the sod" ceremony was held last week. It is hoped that building will be completed in time for Archbishop to open in August.

Gympie. The parish secretary, Coral, has retired, and the new person is Vy. The primary school has outgrown its premises, and it will be moved across the river! The old buildings might be sold to the St Patrick's Villa.

Nanango. The church was broken into, before Christmas.

Funds to Date:

The parish expenditure of funds to date was distributed to each parish. Members were reminded that any unspent" funds would be taken back by the archdiocese, unless clearly their clear purpose for ongoing projects was put in writing. A FEW PARISHES ARE YET TO DO SO. Please do so by end of November. Nanango said that they would use the rest of their Faith Formation money to purchase the booklets "Spirited Prayer""

Deanery Budget for 2008

It was suggested that the Little Books be purchased at Deanery Level Funds, rather than from the Parish level, to avoid confusion. The Faith Formation budget could be adjusted accordingly at parish level spending.

It was pointed out that the different categories were interchangeable i.e. money from one category could be used in another. There was discussion on this – what was the point of having categories, if people could spend on what they want to. It was decided to keep the categories as a guideline, since they keep us focused on the Synod priorities.

Fr Pat suggested sending out a list of liturgy resources, etc. which are recommended , as suggestions for parishes in their spending. This had been done 2 or 3 years ago, but it would be good to do so again.

The LabORa was being used in some parishes, and Barry Copely's workshops were good; some people still not using. If any parish needs more workshopping, they can let us know.

WYD Days in the Dioceses 2008

Julie gave info on the Days in the Dioceses (the 4 days before WYD week begins in Sydney, when overseas pilgrims visit the diocese of their choice) (DitD), which she received at the WYD training day in Brisbane last week. The overseas pilgrims will be collected at airport and gather at ACU, and from there be bussed to deanery centres. Julie has asked Fran if our deanery drop off can be more than one place (i.e. Gympie, Maryborough/Hervey Bay, Childers could be drop off points?). The outline of the 3 full days in the dioceses was given – brief discussion on the AcTS (community service), and then a full discussion on the alternative to the Brisbane's "heart of the City"on the Saturday. IT was felt this is too far, to bus the visitors back down for one day. We could have an alternative.

Bradley Banney, Carmel Donnelly and Elizabeth Arthy and others(representing Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Nanango) were at the Training Day in Brisbane, and there had already been discussion on a visit to Fraser Island. There was also talk of two events , as it would still be a long way to bus some people from Kingaroy to Hervey Bay (or vice versa). Berry pointed out that she had recently priced an excursion for her school, and it would have cost $126 per person to go to Fraser Island for a day! Many factors, such as taking their own picnic lunch, etc needs to be considered for our pilgrims.

Members of the DPC felt that one event – maybe at the geographical centre (Kilkivan, pointed out to us by Fr Pat Dowd!) – would be a good idea. This could showcase "country Australia".A meeting of all WYD reps from parishes would be called so that this could be discussed and confirmed. It is difficult at present, to discuss events in detail, until we know numbers coming to each centre.

Distribution of wyd funds for our deanery

Each parish had sent in info to help us decide on the distribution of the $40 000 which the archdiocese will give our deanery next year.

Julie asked about the attendance of priests from the deanery at the WYD. Fr Joseph wants to know who will be in the deanery, as he will help to cover deanery if necessary. Hervey Bay is keen for Fr Joseph to go with them, if possible and if he wants to. Fr Paul had emailed and said he does not wish to go to WYD. Fr John Hong, has already booked to go with another group to WYD (before his appointment to our deanery). The priests will talk about this at their next meeting.

Using the approximate number of pilgrims going from our deanery (123), plus the knowledge that we will be staging some sort of event on the Saturday, plus the fact that each parish will need some funds to stage its own local event/s, the DPC came up with the proposal on next page.

More discussion on WYD Days in the Dioceses.It was suggested that chartering an aircraft might be cheaper than several buses to come up to our deanery. People also were concerned that it would be too late for pilgrims to come up to our deanery, if their flights did not come in, early on the Thursday to Brisbane. Julie will talk to Fran about the logistics of all this.

Each parish should state how many visitors they are able to host (2 to each host family); Julie will ring around, so that she can inform the Brisbane organizers.

DPC meeting dates for next yearOnce the deanery exec meets in early December, we will send out the dates for next year's meetings .Meeting closed at 12.10pm

2. COSTS OF DAYS IN THE DIOCESES ACTIVITIES:

A. Saturday event: There was discussion at the Deanery Pastoral Council that an alternative event to the "Heart of the City" festival, could take place, perhaps in Kilkivan. This could be a showcase of country life in Australia. Unfortunately, travelling up to 8 hours return trip to Brisbane on the Saturday, to attend the big event there, would not be a sensible option for most parishes in the deanery. The idea of an event in Kilkivan, or maybe 2 events (one in country, one at Fraser Island) is yet to be discussed with the WYD reps from the parishes. We hope to meet in early new year, to confirm details of our deanery activity on the Saturday.

B. Funds will also be needed for local area events. These will most likely happen at local parish level, given the distance between parishes in this deanery. Only a couple of parishes have given thought to this, and it is difficult until we know the number of pilgrims coming to each parish. (Please see attached chart) A meeting of all parish WYD reps in the new year, will clarify this, and further distribution of funds can take place.

BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES: We were informed that Margaret Todd has left
Centacare South Burnett, and was no longer living in Kingaroy.

UNUSED FUNDS
Each parish has received a statement of its spending of deanery funds to
June 07. Mary Kirkpatrick and Julie hope the new presentation will make
things clearer for each parish. There is a total of $4 800 to be spent by
each parish in four categories: Youth, Mission, Training for ministry, and
Adult Faith. It has been made very clear by the Archdiocese that any funds
not spent this year, will be deducted from next year's amount. Therefore
all parishes are advised that THEIR INTENTIONS FOR USE OF ANY REMAINING
FUNDS MUST BE MADE CLEAR, BY OUR NOVEMBER MEETING. For any projects which
are ongoing, we are allowed to reserve that money till next year.

DEANERY LEVEL EXPENDITURE
A statement with deanery level expenditure to June 07, was handed out. This
includes payment of Labora, the Little Books, wages, Deanery Library,
deanery level workshops (eg Ray Sanchez), Beginning Theology fees , funding
for advanced theology studies. Julie commented that the latter is by
application only, and the original purpose was for training of those in
parish ministry. Recently, teachers have been enquiring about the funding
for Foundations. Fr John said that it doesn't matter if the people
sponsored won't be directly involved in parish ministry. It is an
invitation to ALL.
It was suggested that BCE might offer funding for its teachers who study
Foundations.
Tom suggested that the expenditure updates, prepared by Mary Kirkpatrick,
and distributed at all DPC meetings, be sent to all PPC's. Tom reports to
his PPC each time, but this may not be the case in every parish. All DPC
members were encouraged to communicate with their PPC.

WORLD YOUTH DAY – ARCHDIOCESAN FUNDS:
As advised in the note sent out with agenda, all deaneries in the
archdiocese next year will receive $40 000. Discussion was on how to
distribute this money to our parishes. IT was suggested that all parishes
send in details : number of pilgrims they hope to send, projects they wish
to undertake (eg during "Days in the Dioceses"; we should know in October,
how many overseas visitors will come to our parish in 2008, in the week
before WYD in Sydney OR maybe the sponsoring of pilgrims from
overseas/other communities)……..with this information at our November 3rd
meeting, we can make a reasonable decision on allocation of the funds.
INFORMATION ON NUMBER OF PILGRIMS, ETC TO BE SENT IN BY NOVEMBER MEETING.

Fr John said they hoped to send 12 people from Gayndah, including adult
supervisors. They needed to know, as soon as possible, if they would have
$5000 of the funds, (one eighth of the funding for our 8 parishes) so that
this group of people could decide if they could go (finances being the
main hindrance to many people). Julie said it should not be a problem,
considering the size of the group, and the financial hardship , and she
would confirm this with Fr Pat this week. Gayndah has linked with Camp Hill
parish for the WYD pilgrimage.

Some members suggested that there could be some sort of deanery gathering
for all those involved in WYD pilgrimage. At present, parishes were dealing
with WYD at their own parish level.;
it seemed better this way, after attempts at Youth gatherings/communication
at deanery level were becoming very difficult by the end of last year. Some
parishes had commented that they needed to concentrate on their own
struggling youth activities.

There is still the possibility of all parishes in our deanery ,supporting
each other in our WYD preparations, or maybe travelling together to Brisbane
next year. Julie said that Carmel Donnelly (Campus Minister of Xavier) had
offered to help with any information or in any other way, about WYD, for any
parish who is unsure of how to proceed . (Carmel's No. is : 0448488443)

ARCHDIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL – REPORT (Tom Bushell)
Tom said that there were e-reports on the Diocesan website, for those who
use the web. HE handed out a copy of the current e-report – the minutes of
the last APC meeting. Tom suggested that each meeting, we could spend 15 or
20 minutes discussing a couple of the 9 Priorities. This would make Tom's
job of sharing about our deanery at APC meetings, much easier.
Julie pointed out that we need to remember the purpose of the Deanery
funding, was to help implement the 9 priorities in our deanery.

Hope commented, after reading the Archbishop's talk in the e-report, on
"real ignorance about the Eucharist" that she agreed, and it was a real
shame that there was so much ignorance in the church.

AROUND THE PARISHES
Hervey Bay: with rapidly growing population, our schools are finding it
hard to cope with the demand for Catholic education. ( 2 Catholic primaries,
and one Catholic secondary). We have 6 candidates for RCIA, 54 young
children were about to make their first reconciliation, and 79 candidates
were confirmed in June.

Gayndah: the sacramental program is great, and is a real outreach. People
are coming in with no background in the Catholic faith, and one mum is now
coming to church. The Good Samaritans celebrated their 150 years
(sequicentenary), with a great celebration recently in the Gayndah parish.
Kim said there was a wonderful connection between the school and the parish.
There are only 30% of Catholic families in the school, yet there is a good
turn up to the weekly prayer group. It is a wonderful outreach. Classes
come weekly to Mass, and whole school masses are every 2 months or so.

Kingaroy: Mary said there had been a farewell to Margaret Todd in July (the
same time Mary's brother became a Catholic!) Mary has been a volulnteer
since 1995 in Kingaroy. The volunteers do the funeral teas, the bread run,
and visit the aged and sick. There are 8 volunteers currently in thegroup.

Murgon: Fr Dan said that non-Catholic children are enrolling in the
sacramental program (they are baptized in other Christian denominations);
there have been about 10 of these in the last couple of year. This is a very
good thing.

Gympie: There had been a retreat by Fr Chris Gleeson, on Ignatian
Spirituality.

Minutes of the North Country Deanery Pastoral Council meeting
Held at St.Mary`s parish meeting room, Maryborough 19 May 2007.
Meeting commenced: 10.10.am.with a warm welcome from our Chairman.
Opening prayers lead by Sr.Rose were a hymn"Holy Sacred Spirit"a greeting
prayer"Come,Spirit of God",Psalm 113,and finally a reading:(Isaiah
61:1-2a.)by Tom.We then prayed our intercessions,and were blessed by
Fr.Paul.

Matters arising: Julie spoke on the position of Lay Parish Director
proposal. She is also continuing to follow up on the situation re.Murgon
still not having representation on the D.P.C.Fr.Joseph spoke about some good
news regarding priest numbers into the future.
STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS & UNSPENT FUNDS.The distribution of the budget
documents,led to a detailed discussion on several funding matters,Fr.Paul
highlighted some errors of funding allocations in the document.Julie
clarified the position with regard to unused monies,they will be taken into
account when allocations are made next year.Stuart put forward the proposal
that each parish should be able to retain any unused funds for use in the
following year,it was felt that clarification from Brisbane re.budget
planning was needed,Julie to follow up,and report back to our next
meeting.Fr.Paul explained in some detail the fundamentals of the LABORA
C.D.ROM.which is very useful in helping to produce booklets relating to
certain liturgical events.If required Barry Copely is available to come from
Brisbane,to help parishes set up the system.
YOUTH NEWS.Kim (Gayndah) told us about the enthusiastic approach Rebecca
Meredith has adopted working with the local young people,which is producing
great results.
Fr.Joseph indicated he felt he was not being kept informed by the Brisbane
people working on WYD. Julie pointed out that Carmel and the Parish Youth
Ministry team had attended a day in Brisbane, and were busy planning for WYD
activities, this year and next.
ARChDIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL NEWS.Tom reported that the council was
currently having a review carried out,in an effort to gauge its
relevence,and in particular whether it should continue to function.Because
he is required to submit a report to each A.P.C.meeting,he requested that
each parish bring along to each of our deanery meetings a written report of
their relevant activities.Brevity would be good.He pointed out that the
A.P.C.was originated to help the Archbishop with all the Synod
recommendations.Tom handed out a brief prepared report from the Gympie
parish
Margaret asked about the difference between the Archdiocesan Pastoral
Council and the Secretariat for Pastoral Councils. She, as a rep for the
secretariat was already giving reports from all parishes. Julie pointed out
that Tom was to give a deanery level report to the APC (i.e. what parishes
are doing as a result of deanery initiatives), not parish happenings as
such.
DEAN`S REPORT.Fr.Pat advised that he was to be transferred to Gympie to take
over from Fr.Joe,the position regarding his old parish is yet to be
finalised.
AROUND THE PARISHES.Fr.Joseph,reported on the situation in Hervey Bay
regarding all the Jubilee celebration activity are on schedule,as well
things going according to plan with the proposed long day care centre.
Childers,reported that the lay liturgy workshop conducted by Margaret was
actively attended by 40 parishioners.They are currently taking a close look
at their weekend Mass schedule,as at the present time Fr. Is celebrating
five Masses each weekend. The chairman brought the meeting to a conclusion
with the "Lord`s Prayer"at 11.30.am.

Chairperson Tom Bushell welcomed all deanery pastoral council memberts and
thanked them for giving up their Saturday.

Minutes of the previous (October) meeting were read and moved for acceptance
by Fr Joseph, seconded by Margaret Shepherdson.

Business arising:
*The DPC secretary is to write to Murgon PPC, pointing out that they are not
represented on the DPC

*APC representative , Tom Bushell, was unable to attend first APC meeting
for 2007, due to having just been released from hospital.

*The matter of the meeting of the priests and parish workers was raised by
Fr Joseph; it was confirmed these meetings had been discontinued.

*It was suggested that the Mass with Blessing of the Oils should be
promoted as a whole of Deanery event. This will be held in Gympie on 25th
March.

Budget Discussion
Julie spoke on youth expenditure, and suggested our approach this year was
that funds are to be spent at parish level (compared with all youth funds
being allocated to deanery events in previous two years)

The question was raised of fund allocation for future special occasions or
events eg. WYD 08; where would funds be held � deanery or parish. It was
suggested that the funds could be earmarked , for a particular project, and
kept in deanery account.

If all the money allocated to a parish is not used in the year, this money
could be used by other parishes, upon application, for unexpected events

It was suggested each parish should come up with an estimate of what they
feel would be their required amount for WYDO8 expenditure.

Question was raised about funds used last year; some amounts were over
budget in some areas . Fr Pat confirmed there is a degree of flexibility
built into the deanery budget, within reason.

The question arose, were there still any people in any of the parishes
wanting to partake in study courses eg Beginning Theology, or should funds
in this area be re-directed elsewhere.

The Position of Lay Parish Director
The original �Proposal for Future Pastoral Leadership� in our deanery was
studied, along with the suggested revised proposals, which included a Lay
Parish Director. This was discussed at length. It was generally felt that
Option 1 (Placement of a Lay Parish Director in Childers) was the most
acceptable to all present. However, Fr Pat pointed out, the placement of a
LPD to Childers in due course, would need funding support from Brisbane;
our deanery could not afford the full cost by itself. Our preferred option
would be conveyed to the Archbishop.

In the occasion of, in unforeseen circumstances, other priest shortages
occur, this would clearly be a situation to be resolved at archdiocesan
level.

This proposal is for implementation, of course, when we finally lose our
priest at Childers, but we will continue as with the present arrangement
while Fr Emmanuel is located there��which will be until the end of 2008.

Fr Pat confirmed the archbishop has promise dour deanery will have the
services of six priests until the year of his retirement in 2011.
Fr Pat also advised that he felt our parishioners would still be likely to
attend a liturgy of the Word celebration, if no mass was possible, although
probably with slightly fewer numbers.
Fr Joseph suggested all our parish churches should display on their notice
boards, the available mass times right across the deanery.
Fr Paul raised the point: What if, while Fr Emmanuel was still working at
Childers, we unexpectedly lost a priest from another parish. IT was
suggested that the Archdiocese would replace such a priest, as they will
ensure there are 6 administrating priests present in the deanery.

World Youth Day 2008
Discussion on the journey of WYD 08 Cross and Icon; our deanery will be
visited by Cross and Icon on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 August., in 6
different venues: Gympie, Kingaroy, Murgon/Cherbourg, Maryborough, Hervey
Bay, Childers. Each of these 6 parishes is to work out a program of
activities/liturgy for this occasion; all parishes have been sent a kit,
and the WYD office is conducting a workshop today (17 Feb) for all
deaneries. Magdala Thorne (Maryborough) is present at this, and possibly
someone from Kingaroy and Murgon. It is hoped that they will share their
findings with the others in this deanery. It was suggested that we could
make good use of our local media to let the whole community know about this
important event;
It was agreed that the timetable could be flexible, within our deanery, to
allow as many parishes as much coverage as possible.
(**NOTE: A message was emailed to all parishes after these minutes were
taken, to say that there may not be much flexibility with the program)

Archdiocesan Pastoral Council
As previously stated, Tom could not attend the first APC meeting

The details of this year�s DPC meetings were discussed and confirmed.

Around the Parishes
MARYBOROUGH: Fr Gerard Mulholland, recently ordained, came back to his
hometown, to celebrate Mass

GYMPIE: Fr Joe reported a similar occasion with Fr Rod Ward, previously one
of Gympie�s doctors. Gympie is running a well attended RCIA program

KINGAROY: Had a dinner at the local RSL to raise funds to help keep an
orphanage operating in the Phillipines.

CHILDERS: Reported that Fr Emmanuel was going fine, with many very happy
parishioners; they had all enjoyed a recent visit by Bishop Brian Finnigan,
and Mas attendances were progressing well at Gin Gin, and Woodgate

HERVEY BAY: Reported the planning for their big Golden Jubilee event in June
this year, was on track and going well. They are also enjoying the new
meeting room facility. Fr Joseph reported it was pleasing to see at the 12
masses celebrated for Christmas day in the parish, there was in excess of
2500 people present. HErvey Bay parish continues to grow strongly.

Chairperson Tom thanked all present. The meeting concluded with the �Lord�s
Prayer� at 12.05pm

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL IN THE DEANERY!

Deanery Youth Camp

Our Deanery Youth Camp is all set to go, with 20 young people from all over
the deanery traveling to Margate Convention Centre on 9th and 10th December.
We are grateful to Fr Paul Kelly for giving up his time, to be with us on
Saturday; Fr Paul will celebrate Mass with us on Sunday morning.
The members of Emmanuel Youth will be leading a musical session on the
Saturday night, and workshops on Sunday. We are looking forward to some
good music, and lots of fun and fellowship.
Thank you to Carmel Donnelly (Campus Minister, Xavier Catholic College,
Hervey Bay) and Magdala Thorne (Campus Minister, St Mary�s, Maryborough) for
their generous gift of time and talent to the deanery. They have worked
hard and enthusiastically, in organizing this event. Both Carmel and
Magdala, along with Julie Lynch (Deanery Coordinator) will be attending the
camp.

Deanery Youth Meeting
Murgon

Young people from Childers, Nanango, Kingaroy, Murgon and Hervey Bay
gathered last month with our Dean to discuss future youth events.

These include the World Youth Day in Sydney 2008. It is hoped that our
deanery can be very involved with the events leading up to WYD, through the
billeting of youth pilgrims, and possibly by hosting our own pre WYD event.

Lay-Led Liturgies
With the shortage of priests, especially in country areas, many parishes are
now celebrating Lay-led Liturgies of the Word with Communion. Most parishes
in our deanery have been celebrating these Liturgies in various Mass
Centres for some time now, while some are beginning to introduce them when
the need arises. Our Deanery Pastoral Council decided that it would be
helpful to hold a deanery workshop on the format of these Liturgies,
according to Archdiocesan guidelines. This was held in November, at
Gympie, with 25 lay people in attendance.

While Elizabeth Harrington has been to our deanery previously to outline the
Guidelines, this was a good chance to clarify some of the procedures.

Many thanks to Margaret Shepherdson (Nanango parishioner, and member of the
Archdiocesan Commission on the Liturgy) who gave a very informative, clear
presentation. Margaret also handed out practical resources which she has
put together. Thank you Margaret!

ARCHDIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL
New Deanery Rep
Not only do we have Parish and Deanery Pastoral Councils, but also one at
Archdiocesan level! Our Deanery representative for the last term , has been
Julie Lynch, of Hervey Bay. Our Dean is pleased to announce that Tom Bushell
, of Gympie, will represent North Country Deanery on the APC, from 2007.
Tom has been Chair of our Deanery Pastoral Council for the last two years.
He will now report to the Deanery Pastoral Council on any Archdiocesan
issues.

What is the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council?
�The Archbishop calls together the members of the Council to assist him to
enliven and renew the pastoral life of the Archdiocese in light of the JESUS
COMMUNION MISSION vision and the nine archdiocesan priorities, so that this
local church may accomplish its missionary purposes. The Council is asked
to carry out this role by assisting theArchbishop with advice on:
1.Integrating the planning, development and implementation of ways to
enliven the pastoral life and mission of the
Archdiocese.
2. Responding to emerging issues that impact on the pastoral life and works
of the Archdiocese.
3. Overseeing the planning of, and implementation of outcomes from,
Archdiocesan Synods or Assemblies.�

* WORLD YOUTH DAY
Up to 100 000 international pilgrims are expected to arrive in Australia in
July 2008 for the Catholic Church's World Youth Day celebration. Our
Archdiocese will host many of these young visitors in the days leading up to
WYD.
The North Country Deanery hopes to be able to provide billets, and some
local experience for maybe 100 pilgrims. This is a wonderful chance for our
own youth to get involved!

*BRISBANE WYD LAUNCH
Our Archdiocese launched WYD on Sunday July16, and some young people from
our deanery were able to travel to this event.

BUSINESS ARISING
Dean's Comments
Fr. Pat spoke regarding facilities and resources which are available in each
parish and that everyone should be encouraged to use same. There are still
openings in some programs, for parishioners interested in developing their
own spiritual and theological understanding of the church and everyone is
welcome to use these resources.
Bishop's document on media
Fr. Paul Kelly has initiated contacts and will progress further in the year.
Information for distribution within the deanery will be distributed later
on.

Deanery Funding
Summary of the budget and update of funds spent to 14th June was handed out.
$3750.00 is allotted for use at parish level under the following:
� Adult education and training (funding people to travel to conferences,
workshops, etc. also resources for ministries e.g. RCIA)
� Faith Formation (Lenten programs, books, faith education, workshops)
� Mission and Outreach (Wider community outreach � projects that create
awareness of, and commitment to social justice and social welfare.

Three examples of the manner in which funds are being utilized in our
deanery are:
Hervey Bay Parish
Committed to helping a young man establish an orphanage in Nepal � Forget Me
Not Childrens Home � this project is a wonderful example of outreach to the
wider community.
Murgon Parish
Two representatives travelling to Alice Springs to be part of conference.
Nanango/Kingaroy Parishes combined
Water conservation issues being raised � ongoing community effort

Most parishes have resources left over from their allocation. It was
suggested that Adult Education and Training for Ministry should be
particularly encouraged due to the current dilemma with regard to the lack
of priests.
REVIEW OF TRAINING FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE LEADERSHIP

Fr. Pat Cassidy stressed again, the need for prompt training of more people
willing to provide leadership in the near future.
Childers parish will most probably only have Fr. Emmanuel for three years at
the most and it was suggested that a major part of the next Agenda be
devoted to the future prospects for Childers.
It was also mentioned that Nanango and Kingaroy would review what is done
locally (with regard to lay-lead liturgies) and clarify what is required for
the future smooth running of these parishes. The 20 to 30 year age group is
especially active in Kingaroy/Nanango and possibly ideas could be gleaned
from this group of young people.
Kingaroy Liturgy Committee has noticed a discrepancy between the Bishop's
Statement and local practice.
Margaret Shepparton is going to run a program soon. Retraining/review will
then take place and will be ongoing.
All parishes are to get together at next deanery meeting and spend time
formulating plans suitable to their individual needs.
Julie Lynch suggested that a deanery level (Lay Leaders of Liturgy) Workshop
be held later in the year � most likely after October meeting. ( This
workshop, at Fr Pat's suggestion, could be based on the experience of
Kingaroy and Nanango, and the format they have developed.)
Leaders of the Future - It was generally conceded that the younger parish
members must be attracted into this type of ministry if the church is to
continue its work.

YOUTH UPDATE

Julie Lynch advised that the Deanery Youth Camp set down for May has been
postponed until December and will be held in Margate. A meeting between Lay
Ministers will be held to arrange a final plan and talk about World Youth
Day which will be held in 2008.
Sunday � 16th July is the Brisbane Launch of World Youth Day and Julie Lynch
hopes that a contingent of youth will make an effort to attend. All youth
contacts and deanery youth council members are keen to participate.
(An online forum has been set up , after Fr Pat initiated earlier meetings
in our deanery about communication for youth in the deanery. Magdala Thorne
, campus minister of St Mary�s , Maryborough, has contacted Malcolm Hart
(Diocesan Youth team) and he has enabled us to use the website��..
www.dym.org.au (look at forums). We will need to meet with youth, and begin
use of this forum.)
Bishop Finnigan advised that a website has been set up for the electronic
pilgrim. A figure of around 100,000 has been cited � as expected number of
attendees at World Youth Day. Billets will be required in coast, city and
country with visiting youth members being billeted out in twos, to each
family/group etc.

DEANERY REGISTRY
It was suggested that Ministers of the Word should share resources �
possibly via a website so all can benefit from new ideas and add comments.
This could also be used for Lay leaders of Liturgy.

PROPOSED PLAN FOR PASTORAL LEADERSHIP TO 2011 (Response from Archbishop). �
Bishop Brian Finnigan and Chris Ehler

Bishop Finnigan handed out, then read the response by the Archbishop, to
proposals put down by deanery. He made mention of the third recommendation
in the response and the challenge it would be to finance and support a lay
parish pastoral director and how important it was, that all parishioners
realized their own potential and ability to carry out many and varied
duties. One parish in Brisbane sends out resources to their leadership
teams each Sunday to assist.
Sr. Anne Surtees is involved in, and is concerned that adequate formation be
carried out in the leadership process.

Bishop Finnigan gave an informative talk on overseas seminarians, their
desire to be part of the Australian church and also the difficulties,
requirements and legalities required, before they might be accepted into the
Australian system.
It would appear that lay persons may be the more immediate solution to ease
the present shortage. It is estimated that in 2011 there will be in the
vicinity of 76 active priests in the dioscese(?)

Bishop Finnigan also spoke re the Stewardship Program and establishing a new
mentality within the church. TIME - TALENT - TREASURE !!!!

Pastoral Plan for Leadership in our Deanery

Last year , we were invited to submit to the Archbishop, a proposal for
the future pastoral leadership in our region (to 2011), taking into account
the declining number of priests. The proposed number of priests to serve
our deanery to 2011, was 5 (at present there are 7 priests serving 8
parishes).

Because of our geographically large region, and the many , small and
far-flung rural communities, our proposal stated that the sacramental needs
of our people could be served with no fewer than 6 priests.
Our proposal included the continued training of lay people for leadership
roles, the continued employment of pastoral associates in larger centres,
and possibly the further employment of lay leaders, in the future.

Archbishop�s Response to Our Proposal
At our recent Deanery Pastoral Council in Gympie, Bishop Brian Finnigan and
Chris Ehler, from the Pastoral Planning Commission , delivered the
Archbishop�s response to our proposal.

The Archbishop said he:
*accepted our request to allocate no less than 6 priests in our deanery
